Do not taste soap or put a suspected product in your mouth. If a batch may contain excess alkali, isolate it and review both a measured pH result and the complete formula/batch record. Properly made traditional soap should not contain unreacted lye, but pH alone does not prove that a batch is safe.
How should soap pH be measured?
Use pH strips or a calibrated pH meterthat is suitable for alkaline samples. Follow the strip or meter manufacturer's method and use the same documented sample preparation each time. For a meter, calibrate with fresh buffers that bracket the expected alkaline range, rinse the probe, and record the sample ratio, temperature, result, date, and instrument. Do not press an unsuitable household strip onto a dry bar and treat the color as a release test.
What does the pH result prove?
A repeatable pH measurement can flag a result outside the maker's validated range, but normal soap is alkaline and one pH number cannot identify free sodium or potassium hydroxide by itself. Compare the reading with a validated formula/process baseline. If the result is unexpected, keep the batch on hold and investigate; a qualified laboratory can perform a free-alkali or related analytical test when release decisions require stronger evidence.
What records should be checked?
Recalculate the exact oil weights, oil identities and SAP values, lye type and supplier-stated purity, superfat, water method, units, and scale records. Reconcile what was actually weighed with the formula. A selected superfat is a formulation input, not proof that the correct materials were weighed or mixed.
What should happen to a suspect batch?
Keep it clearly labeled and physically separated from usable or sellable stock. Do not release it because a calendar cure date passed. Investigate the cause and use a validated rework or disposal procedure appropriate to the materials and local rules. When the evidence is insufficient, do not use or sell the batch.
Prevention checklist
- Weigh materials with an appropriate, checked scale; do not measure lye or oils by volume.
- Run every formula through a lye calculator and independently review it.
- Record lot, purity, actual weight, operator, process exception, pH method, and result.
- Use current supplier safety data sheets and suitable eye/skin protection.
